Visual Trends of 2018 reflection towards 2019
According to “Creative Services and VisualTrends” at Adobe Stock,
“Trend forecast is designed to give artists and brands a window into what’s drawing consumers’ attention in a fast-changing world. They’re about more than what people are enjoying or fascinated by at the moment. They’re a look at where we are as a culture, and as a world, so you can really understand what makes an image resonate.”
Some of the trends that were picked are:
“Silence and Solitude”
In this world of 24 hours news cycles, politics and the relentless pull of digital distractions, we see a growing demand for images that convey comfort and regeneration. Images that take us back to nature, that show that less is more. Viewers are responding to imagery that offers respite — these images operate like a breath of fresh air to the viewer. They present a break from a demanding and confusing time.
"The fluid self"
The very idea of identity is shifting, and artists are working to represent the new ways we understand ourselves. “Identity is so much less permanent and stable than it used to be, just consider the fact that Facebook has 71 gender options now. There are endless permutations of individual identity. A few years ago, people were talking about race or ethnicity, then body type, abilities, and age. Now we’re looking at the fluid self — identity as a vast and ever-changing range of ideas that shouldall be celebrated.”
"Multilocalism”:
Travel and technology are making the world a smaller place, turning us into one interconnected, global village. Artists and brands are embracing a mosaic of cultural experiences, and addressing consumers’ deepening global consciousness.
"Touch and Tactility”:
Our days are increasingly shaped by screens and devices rather than real-world, tactile interactions. “To make up for this loss, we’re seeing an incredible push from artists toward literal connection, actual touch, and being in the same room with someone,” It’s an invitation for a sensory experience. People are responding to anything that has to do with direct touch. In the visual world, it’s all about showing connections, whether it’s through images with richer textures, or people looking directly into the camera to establish abold, personal moment with the viewer.” We’ll look at images that invite us to connect, and talk to artists about capturing texture and touch in their images.
This growing trend of “The fluid self” by Adobe, is also depicted by "Getty images visual trends" researches.
Earlier in 2018 Getty images released its visual trends for 2018 after analyzing one billion searches and 400 million images downloads from Getty and studied advertising trends, examined pop culture shifts to predict three defining visual trends of 2018:
Masculinity Undone:
The millennials are rejecting gender stereotypes , and one-dimensional depictions are being challenged.
Given the masculinity crisis infast-changing social and visual culture, creatives have an opportunity to discard dull, destructive male stereotypes.
Other trends depicted by Getty images are:
Second Renaissance:
Photographers repurpose classic visual art themes to over turn stereotypes and rewrite a more positive, culturally rich narrative.
In refereeing historical artworks, photographers find gravity and credibility.
Conceptual Realism:
Realistic, Authentic, believable are buzzwords dominating the commercial marketplace, rather that staged imagery. As trust in media diminishes, we crave imagery that looks real.
According to “digital trends” that reflects data search in 2017 of trends that continue into 2018, “real people” jumped by 58 percent, while LGBT skyrocketed 782 percent, candid street photography 162 percent and the still-relevant authentic up by 134 percent.
In terms of design and visual impact, there are increases for searches with negative space (meaning that most of the frameis consisted not by the main subjects) (29 percent), wide-angle shots (110 percent) and shapes (1,189 percent).
Searches for cities also saw a dramatic 1,285 percent increase, while landscapes went up by (just) 215 percent and cinematic by 315.
But, it doesn’t mean that the photographer should now seek to shoot the topics that were mentioned above.
It’s just a research highlight.
Every individual artist/photographer should follow their own heart, sense and palette. This is what will make them unique and outstanding.
Also, photographic images that are made without a camera (as photograms) are becoming popular.
There is one more important thing that we should not forget, especially in our modern digital era. We cannot forget the actual print. Whether on paper, or on aluminum, or any other surface. We are so used nowadays to look at images on the screen of a laptop or a phone, but what, mostly, stays as tangible object of art is a print. And an archival print, preferably as a part of a limited edition, is what most collectors are buying, and what you can see in auction houses, galleries and museums. So, whether your passion is in portraiture, landscape, nature, street photography, conceptual visual ideas, fashion or photo journalism, please print your artworks. It is a great sensation to look at an actual print.
Just as an example of the photography auction results from last week at the major auction houses in NYC, we can find these:
A vintage photogram by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy(“Untitled with circular shapes and a diagonal line” circa 1923-25 ) was sold for $447,000
or a print by Diane Arbus (“Identical Twins, Roselle, NJ 1996”) was sold for $732,500.
Follow your own passion and creativity and you will succeed.
Getty
